Mr. Sugandh Rajaram, the Indian High Commissioner to Ghana has declared his country’s commitment to build a sturdy partnership with the College of Health, Yamfo (CoHY) to position the institution to become a university of international recognition. He said as part of the partnership, scholarship packages would be granted to the staff to pursue Masters’ and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes in related areas with accredited Indian Universities and assured ”students and staff exchange programmes to boost teaching and learning would as well be encouraged”. Mr.Rajaram made the declaration on Thursday when he visited the College in the company of Mr George Yaw Boakye, the Ahafo Regional Minister as part of his one-day working tour of the region. Regarding research and institutional collaborations, the High Commissioner said suitable Indian universities would be identified to partner and support the College to conduct research to enhance academic excellence. On his part, Dr Mohammed M. Ibrahim, the Director of CoHY stated since its inception the Board and Management of the College has been working within the context of the vision and mission of the institution. He announced that “the vision of the College is to be a centre of excellence with the mandate to envisage and respond to the national health workforce needs of communities in Ghana and elsewhere”. Dr. Ibrahim added the “College’s mission is to train and educate health professionals, who are highly skilled, knowledgeable, well-motivated and capable of providing quality health services to all manner of persons in all settings by applying modern technological principles to health care delivery”. Touching on the College’s academic performance, he said the first batch of Physician Assistants students had 72 per cent pass rate that enabled the College to top the country’s table, while students from the Allied Health programmes had 95 per cent pass rate. He said the rapid growth of the College had led to infrastructure inadequacy such as hostel facilities, lecture rooms, staff accommodation, information-communication and technology and library. He said inadequate means of transport was making supervision of students’ practical activities difficult and therefore appealed to government to assist the College with a higher-seater capacity bus to aid students in their clinical practice and other field work. Dr. Ibrahim said the College was in dire need of teaching and learning materials such as projectors, desktop computers and laptops for both staff and students, printers, equipment for the science laboratory and required modern books to equip the library. The College has a total student population of 1,518 comprising 771 males and 747 females representing 50.79 per cent and 49.21 per cent respectively, he said and explained 1,444 constituted regular students and 76 sandwich students. CoHY became fully established in 2015 by the Ministry of Health with the core mandate to train multi-purpose health personnel who are diligent and dedicated to the well-being of the citizens of Ghana and beyond through the provision of quality preventive and curative healthcare, Dr. Dr. Ibrahim indicated. He said currently the institution runs four degree programmes – Bachelor of Science (BSc.) Physician Assistantship, BSc. Community Mental Health, BSc. Community Health Nutrition and BSc. Health Information Management. Dr.  Ibrahim mentioned BSc. Environmental Health, BSc. Opticianry, BSc. Health Promotion, BSc. Medical Laboratory Science as well as BSc. Epidemiology and Disease Control as some programmes awaiting accreditation.

The College of Health, Yamfo (CoHY) has held its seventh matriculation ceremony for 732 new students for the 2021/2022 academic year at Yamfo in the Tano North Municipality of Ahafo Region.   Hitherto, the College’s student population stood at 785 and the current enrollment has thus increased the number to 1,517, Dr. Dr. Mohammed M. Ibrahim, the Director of the College said, when he was speaking at the ceremony on the theme ”The Role of the Trainee in Delivering Quality Healthcare in Response to Changing Trends”.   It was attended by several stakeholders’ representatives and other local dignitaries including Nana Ansah Adu-Baah II, the Paramount Chief of Yamfo Traditional Area, and the President of the Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs.   “The 732 fresh students pursuing both regular and sandwich programmes comprised 370 males and 357 females,” he said, adding that 31 males and 168 females were admitted to read Bachelor of Science (BSc) Community Health Nutrition while 116 males and 66 females were also admitted unto the BSc Health Information Management regular programmes.   Dr. Dr. Ibrahim further explained other students for the regular stream were 59 males and 24 females for the BSc. Physician Assistantship as well as 125 males and 65 females for the BSc Community Mental Health.   Regarding the sandwich programmes he said nine males and 19 females were doing BSc. Community Health Nutrition, 11 males and six females, BSc. Health Information Management as well as 20 males and 11 females, BSc. Community Mental Health, he said.   Dr. Dr. Ibrahim announced the College intended to run more innovative and problem-solving academic programmes such as BSc. Environmental Health, BSc. Medical Laboratory Science, BSc. Health Promotion and BSc. Epidemiology.   The respective curricular for the above programmes had been submitted to the Ministry of Health and other relevant bodies awaiting clearance, he said.   Dr. Dr. Ibrahim said as a young academic institution, its challenges ranged from issues of accommodation to lecture halls and offices.   He however, indicated the College’s Management with the support of the Advisory Board and staff had initiated positive steps geared towards addressing some of those challenges to enhance academic work in the school.   Consequently the College had built and inaugurated a 540 bed-capacity students’ hostel, increased water supply on campus and procured a mini-bus to enhance transportation, Dr. Dr. Ibrahim said.

The Board Chairman of the College of Health, Yamfo (CoHY) in the Tano North District of the Ahafo Region, has said the lack of adequate infrastructure and human capital support for the institution is hampering the effort to train health professionals. Joseph Addae Akwaboah said getting assistance from the government and other stakeholders would accelerate the realization of the school’s vision, hence appealed for help. As a young academic institution, Mr. Addae Abwaboah said they are struggling with the lack of hostel facilities for students, central administration, a bigger bus for students’ clinical training purposes, and limited teaching faculties. Other challenges, he said, are poor internal road network, encroachment on the school’s land, lack of fenced wall to ensure security, and large casual workers with a huge drain on the college’s Internally Generated Funds.   The Board Chairman, however, said the Board and the institution’s management have initiated some steps to help resolve some of the teething challenges. Section of the maiden graduating students of college of Health, Yamfo This, he said, “includes the completion and commissioning of a 540 students capacity hostel block, increasing the water supply on campus to about 130,000 liters, procurement of a minibus to enhance transportation, among others”. “However, we once more call on all our stakeholders, including NGOs, to continue assisting us so we can realize our vision and mission as an institution”, Mr. Addae Akwaboah appealed. He hinted that they intend to run innovative and problem-solving academic programs such as BSc in Environmental Health, Medical Lab Science, Health Promotion, Optician, and Epidemiology shortly, having already submitted the respective curriculum for these programs to the Ministry of Health waiting for approval.
